If I have the motor move forward at full speed, and then want it to move backwards, do I need to stop the motor in between? I mean, I wouldn’t throw my car in reverse before stopping it first….

You don’t need to stop the motor between going forwards and backwards electric motors can handle that.
However, a rapid change like that will draw a lot more power for a fraction of a second (as the motor swaps)
If your batteries are going flat, this sudden draw of power could cause Edison to reset, but other then that it should be fine
