Obstacle detection calibration

You can regulate the sensitivity of Edison’s obstacle detection system. By making the obstacle detection system more sensitive, Edison can detect obstacles further away. By making the system less sensitive, Edison will only detect very close obstacles.

Obstacle detection barcode

What to do

Follow these instructions to adjust your Edison’s obstacle detection system:

  1. Download and print off the Obstacle Detection Calibration Barcode and Instructions here
  2. Scan the barcode with Edison.
  3. Choose sensitivtiy setting (maximum or custom) and follow the appropriate steps

Set maximum sensitivity

After scanning the barcode, set Edison down on a table or desk and remove any obstacles in front of Edison. Then press the play (triangle) button. Edison is now in calibration mode.

The left sensitivity is calibrated first.

  1. Repeatedly press the play (triangle) button, which increases sensitivity, until the red LED on the left is flickering.
  2. Repeatedly press the record (round) button, which decreases the sensitivity, until the LED completely stops flickering.
  3. Press the stop (square) button to switch over to calibrate the right side.
  4. Repeatedly press the play (triangle) button until the right red LED is flickering.
  5. Repeatedly press the record (round) button until the LED completely stops flickering.
  6. Press the stop button to complete the calibration.

Set custom sensitivity

It is possible to set the distance that obstacles are detected. To do this, scan the ‘calibrate obstacle detection’ barcode, place an obstacle in front of Edison at the distance you want Edison to detect obstacles, then press the play (triangle) button.

Struggling to get Edison to detect obstacles?

If you are having trouble with an obstacle detection program even after performing an obstacle detection calibration, check the following common issues:

  • Ensure that you are using obstacles Edison can detect. Edison will be best able to detect obstacles which are opaque but not too dark (e.g. not black) and at least as tall as Edison. Edison cannot detect transparent obstacles.
  • Avoid running obstacle detection programs in very bright light, such as sunlight, as this can negatively affect the program.
  • If you are using obstacle detection in a program you have coded, be sure you have obstacle detection turned on. All of the Edison programming languages except for EdBlocks and the barcodes require the obstacle detection sensor to be turned on to work. Double check your program to ensure you have the obstacle detection sensor turned on.

Heads up

The Australian Federal Parliament has passed a law that extends goods and services tax (GST) to low value imports of physical goods imported by consumers from 1 July 2018.

This means that all customers purchasing Edison robots and accessories with an Australian shipping address must now pay GST. The GST will be automatically added to your purchase and show as a line item on your invoice.

We've detected that you are in Australia, so we wanted to let you know that we have changed your settings to view our Australian site, which displays GST inclusive pricing.
