Turn calibration

On occasion, you may need Edison to turn or drive accurately (for example, to complete a maze).

Below you will find information on how to calibrate your Edison V3 robot to drive and turn more accurately.

Edison can be coded screen-free using barcodes.

Calibrating Edison V3 for accurate driving and turning

Calibrating Edison V3 is easy to do, but you will need to pay close attention to the instructions.

Firstly, download and print off the instructions here.

Perform a drive calibration

1. Perform a drive calibration by scanning the first barcode on page 3 of the guide.
2. Place Edison down on a flat smooth surface and press the play (triangle) button twice.
3. Edison will drive back and forth at different speeds, calibrating for the correct speed.
4. When the calibration is complete, Edison will stop driving. If during the drive calibration Edison bumped into something, then repeat the drive calibration process.

Perform a turn calibration

1. Perform a turn calibration by scanning the second barcode on page 3 of the guide.
2. Place Edison on the turn calibration pad (on page 4 of the guide) inside the Edison outline and press the play (triangle) button.
3. Edison will spin clockwise four times (make sure you count four complete turns). When Edison stops it should be facing the green zone.
4. If Edison is not facing the green zone, use the round and triangle buttons to correct the position so the Edison is facing the green zone.
5. Reposition the Edison inside the outline and press the square button and Edison will spin anti-clockwise four times (make sure you count four complete turns). When Edison stops it should be facing the green zone.
6. If Edison is not facing the green zone, use the round and triangle buttons to correct the position so the Edison is facing the green zone.
7. Press the square button to finish the turn calibration.

Repeat the above process to ensure the Edison rotates four times and finishes each spin in the green zone. You may need to repeat this process three or four times.

Troubleshooting the turn calibration

Edison does not start the turn calibration

Check that you have an Edison V3 robot. Edison V1 and V2 do not have a turn calibration feature.

Ensure the Edison has the latest firmware update. To check and update the firmware visit any of the three programming apps:

EdBlocks App – https://www.edblocksapp.com/v3/
EdScratch App – https://www.edscratchapp.com/v3/
EdPy App – https://www.edpyapp.com/v3/

From the Menu (top left), select ‘Update firmware’ (requires a USB connection).

Edison will complete the turn calibration on the page, but will not turn accurately on the maze

If the maze has a rough surface, then Edison will struggle to turn accurately. For the best results, try performing the turn calibration on the maze surface.

Try adding waits in between each drive movement. This allows Edison to come to a complete stop before driving again. Adding half a second between each drive movement will improve accuracy.

Use the lowest available speed. This reduces inaccuracy caused by inertia and spinning wheels (skidding)

Heads up

The Australian Federal Parliament has passed a law that extends goods and services tax (GST) to low value imports of physical goods imported by consumers from 1 July 2018.

This means that all customers purchasing Edison robots and accessories with an Australian shipping address must now pay GST. The GST will be automatically added to your purchase and show as a line item on your invoice.

We've detected that you are in Australia, so we wanted to let you know that we have changed your settings to view our Australian site, which displays GST inclusive pricing.
